Alex Hilson announces “Leave of Absence” from BIA to Run for Councillor

On Monday (July 11, 2022), Downtown Acton BIA Coordinator announced his leave of absence to run for council in the next municipal election. The public minutes of the BIA meeting which took place last night states under section XI,


“Other Business - Leave of absence: Alex will be taking a leave of absence in August so as to run in the municipal election. The board will be meeting separately to create a plan to deal with the change. Mike [Albano] will be getting additional information from the clerk.” Alex Hilson has spent over two and a half years now with the BIA as their Coordinator. Hilson led Downtown Acton through the pandemic, while doubling the size of their social media. He helped grow and build the Acton Farmers' Market, brought back the BIA's Trick or Treat on Mill and Main and Canada Day events, supervised a process of replacing infrastructure throughout the BIA, and helped develop a series of indoor crafts markets at the Acton Town Hall Centre. He has watered Acton's flowers and helped the BIA enjoy a low vacancy rate. Outside of the BIA, he has worked for the Acton Music Centre, Acton UP, The Acton Tanner and the Town of Halton Hills. He sits on the boards of the Acton Foodshare and Inspire Halton, volunteers for the Communications Committee of the Anglican Church of Canada, is Rector's Warden at St. Alban the Martyr Anglican Church in Acton and is the President-Elect for the Optimist Club of Halton Hills, among other roles. He was chosen as one of three Canada 150 Ambassadors for the Town of Halton Hills and has been recognized by the Associated Fundraising Professionals and the Halton Hills Cultural Roundtable for his volunteer work. Acton UP reached out to Hilson for comment regarding his departure. Hilson says, “I’m excited for this opportunity, although I will of course miss my daily work in the BIA. We have a great town and I look forward to serving it in a greater capacity going forward. Until I formally file, this is all I can say. Stay tuned”.
