First Coronavirus Case Confirmed in Halton

In a press conference on March 11, Dr. Hamidah Meghani, Medical Officer of Health, Halton, announced that late on March 10 the region received confirmation of the first positive COVID-19 test result. The patient is a 32 year old female resident of Burlington, who is a frontline health care worker at Hamilton Health Services. This case is travel related. She returned from Hawaii on Saturday, and developed symptoms on Monday. She followed “standard operating procedures” and they are working to assess all contacts. Dr. Barry Lumb, Chief of Medicine Hamilton Health Services (HHS), assured that they have been developing processes for weeks and so were able to respond quickly to protect patient, staff and physicians. The infected health care worker was working in the HHS Cancer Center Monday afternoon when she developed symptoms. She called infectious disease arranged to be tested and then self isolated at home. Dr. Meghani reinforced that risk to Halton residents remains low and good prevention is key:

  • wash hands frequently,

  • use hand sanitizer,

  • disinfect surfaces and

  • stay home when ill
