At Halton Hills Council on April 16, 2018, Councillors passed a motion to support April 24, 2018, as “Human Values Day”.
The motion was proposed by Halton Hills Mayor Rick Bonnette. The motion was moved by Regional Councillor Jane Fogal and seconded by Councillor Moya Johnson.
Recognition of “Human Values Day” and “the Walk for Values” started in 2003 after street violence took place in the Malvern area of Toronto. The values promoted are love, peace, truth, non-violence and right conduct.
According to the motion, “these values are inherent in all creeds, countries, cultures, and communities, making these values true ‘Values without Borders’”.
The values were inspired by Sathya Sai Baba, an Indian Religious leader. “The Walk for Values” site says the walk “has now spread to 10 cities across Canada and has grown to reach over 30 cities around the world, over 4 continents, in countries including the USA, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Hong Kong, India, and Malaysia”.
“The ‘Walk for Values’ is designed to raise the awareness of the 5 Human Values and to educate people on the importance of practicing them daily” continues a blurb on the Walk’s website. “Each step taken during the walk for values is a step towards positive change. Whether you think of a single value or all of the human values, you are heading towards being the best version of yourself, for your family, for your community, and for the world”.
