Acton charities giving back for the holidays

Every year at this time there is a need for charitable giving. And every organization we spoke to confirmed that when it comes to giving, Acton is an amazing community. This year the need may be greater, but the giving trend continues. The churches and community groups of Acton have been very active collecting for the holidays. St Alban’s Anglican Church held their annual Christmas Tea and Bake Sale on November 28. Tickets were purchased online, in advance, and nearly 100 ‘Tea to Go’ boxes were purchased for either pick up or delivery. An outdoor bake sale was hosted in the parking lot during pick up times as well. Trinity United Church hosted an online cookie plate sale which sold out. Mixed cookie plates were pre-ordered for pick up on December 6. They also moved their annual bazar and auction online. The bazar is ongoing and can be found on Facebook as ‘Trinity’s Christmas Bazar’. Bethel Church ran a successful Operation Christmas Child campaign. It was so successful that it requires its own story which we will publish later this week. Stay tuned. St Joseph Patron of Canada is responsible for the food portion of the Acton Christmas Hamper Program. Normally hampers are packed by The Rotary and the Knights of Columbus. This year is different for both collection and distribution. Typically, schools are a major collection and storage points and this year that isn’t available. Sobeys’ is collecting financial contributions at check out until December 24. And participants in the program will receive gift cards to shop at local grocery stores instead of their usual hampers. Major Snellgrove of the Salvation Army tells Acton UP that they collected sufficient toys for all the children registered for the Hamper Program. And although the kettles are not out this year some individuals have continued in a non-traditional format, collecting online. Locally you can support Tina and Jillian Marshall at https://kettle.salvationarmy.ca/17021/fill-the-kettle-2020/100902/tina-and-jillian-marshall?fbclid=IwAR2fRYRnRPTzvzVF1YTlanTFxJ9abQuXHoFnU_raq9lwlwp_Sb8h0wHrqOc#.X7_QPx308Bg.facebook Links2Care altered their stocking program this year. Normally each participant receives pajamas, underwear, socks and toiletries. This year was limited to pajamas and $25 gift cards to Walmart or Giant Tiger. Janet Battista, Community Support Co-ordinator, says “This year has been incredible with the overwhelming generosity of community members and we have many more sponsors than applicants this year which is a first.” The Optimist Club of Halton Hills is selling Christmas Trees in the Acton GO parking lot until December 12 or they sell out. There are only 15 trees left. Unfortunately, they were not able to host breakfast with Santa this year, but their annual Santa Call program is running this week where kids in JK and SK receive a call from Jolly ole’ St Nick himself. This year they have added weekly photo contests to their Facebook page. Check them out at https://www.facebook.com/OptimistClubOfHaltonHills to enter. Every week they give away a $25 gift card. The Community Christmas Dinner held at Acton Town Hall on December 25 has been canceled. However, Kathleen Dills and her group of ‘Santa’s Helpers’ are looking to provide the residents of Acton group homes a Christmas gift bag. “This year we will provide bags that include toiletries, some items of warm clothing and some goodies to 25 women and 61 men. We are packing the bags on December 14 and they will be delivered over the next few days to the group homes and locations throughout Acton (with the utmost caution).” Dills tells prospective donors in her letter for donation consideration. Many local businesses/organizations have donated including: Rotary of Acton, Superior Glove, IG Wealth Management - Liz Leckie, Fisker Construction, Terry Bergie - Broker, Remax Realty Centre, Helson LLP, Tire Discounters, Tandia and Crewson Corners Landscaping. If you wish to donate before December 14 please email akrdills@gmail.com. The need is great. But the hearts and generosity of Acton residents is greater.
