Acton Farmers Market has implemented a new project encouraging the community to shop and eat local fresh food. The local food challenge will support farmers within Halton Hills and nourish the community. According to the original local food challenge website, where the Acton Farmers' Market took inspiration.
“During the 2020 pandemic, we all experienced Empty Shelves Syndrome. We saw the truth: grocery stores are the endpoint of the global, industrial-scale, just-in-time food system. Grocery stores don’t have food, they stock food.”
The Acton Farmers Market's goal is to challenge the community to eat foods within a 150km radius for ten days. BIA member William, who took part in creating the local food challenge shares,
“We’re hoping this will promote business for local farmers and shops and encourage citizens to think critically about food supply chains. Typically people can get local food from Farmer’s Markets, gardens, or local farms.”
Alex Hilson, also a BIA Coordinator comments,
“Supporting local not only helps our local businesses and producers but - when it comes to food - can actually mean tastier food. We’re happy to support this initiative and encourage residents to visit our market and neighbouring markets in our area.”
The Acton Farmers Market encourages the community to participate in this ten-day challenge and hopes to see this event bring the local farmers and consumers closer.
