That is the question that will be posed to residents in a new online survey starting Monday. Several Ontario municipalities allow residents to keep backyard chickens, towns as close as Caledon, Brampton and a pilot project in certain areas of Toronto.
“This will apply to Urban areas like Acton, Georgetown as well as the rural clusters of Norval and Glen Williams. It (the survey) will have more information when it is posted online” says Clark Somerville, Regional Councillor Ward 1 & 2.
According to Somerville, staff have been researching this option for almost a year. Topics of concern include regulations, enforcement and coop sizes. The survey provides public consultation prior to this issue being raised at town council in May.
There are certainly reasons both for and against backyard chickens in urban areas. Those pro chickens often cite fresh eggs, pest control, and education, anti chicken arguments often include poop, predators, and noise.
Whatever side you fall on, have your say at http://letstalkhaltonhills.ca/ starting Monday, March 9.
