Catch the Ace-Townsend Smith Hospice Lottery

How would you like a weekly chance to win some money and help a local charity at the same time? The Townsend Smith Hospice Foundation (TSHF) is banking on this with their Catch the Ace lottery, which is running now until March 31, offering participants the chance to win the weekly draw and the jackpot if the Ace is drawn.

According to https://www.townsend-smith.ca/event/catch-the-ace-2021/, “To play Catch the Ace participants must purchase tickets which correspond with a numbered envelope. Each envelope holds a card from a standard deck of playing cards. Each week a name will be pulled from the draw, the name drawn is the weekly winner, who wins 20% of the ticket sales that week! They will also be invited to reveal what playing card is inside their envelope. If it is the Ace of Spades, they will also win an additional 30% of the ticket sales! If that card is not the Ace of Spades, that card will be removed from play and that 30% of the ticket sales gets rolled over into the next week. This process repeats until the Ace of Spades is found! The remaining 50% of the overall ticket sales goes to the Townsend Smith Hospice Foundation.”

Acton Up talked to Kate Holmes, Director of Development for the TSHF about the lottery. “20% of ticket sales go into the weekly draw, 30% into the jackpot and 50% to the charity,” she stated. They have done 2 weekly draws so far. Week 1’s winner received just over $400 and week 2 was won by a group of 10 women, “the She Beasts” from Firepower CrossFit in Milton who reinvested their $380 into additional ticket purchases. The Ace has not been drawn and right now that jackpot stands at $1200 PLUS an additional $2500 donated by an anonymous donor. “And if your ticket doesn’t win it rolls over into the next week’s draw” says Holmes.

“Mayor Bonnette has bought a ticket” she says, “we appreciate his support for Catch the Ace and his continual support for our cause.”

Tickets are on sale now. They are 5 for $10, 20 for $25, 80 for $50, or 200 for $100 and are available from https://tshfcatchtheace-web.bump5050.net/.

While Holmes is the only paid staff at TSHF she is adamant that they “couldn’t do it without all the amazing volunteers.”
