HALTON HILLS, ON - The Town is pleased to announce the official opening of the outdoor plaza at the Halton Hills Cultural Centre and Library. Located at 9 Church Street, in the heart of historic downtown Georgetown, this new outdoor public space will serve as an important place to gather and celebrate the unique character, diversity and cultural heritage in Halton Hills.
“We are happy to unveil the transformation of this space,” said Mayor Rick Bonnette. “When we do get back to normal, this will be a great cultural hub for residents to gather and socialize, right in the heart of downtown Georgetown.”
The new plaza is universally accessible, providing barrier-free access and use. A variety of seating options will be available surrounded by trees and planting beds. The planting scheme is focused on pollinator, drought tolerant and native plants.
Funded through a partnership between the Town and donations from the Friends of the Halton Hills Public Library and Cargill Ltd., the plaza provides more outdoor space options for events and programs that compliment the Cultural Centre and Library.
Construction of the plaza started in the fall of 2020, with the planting of trees and shrubs completed in early June of 2021. Residents are encouraged to drop by and use the facility at their leisure, while adhering to the province’s gathering restrictions and following social distancing protocols.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Halton Hills’ usual tradition of hosting a grand opening celebration was not possible. Watch the video of Councillor Lawlor providing remarks.
