First Student thanks first responders with a parade of buses
What are bus drivers doing these days? Ontario schools have been out since March Break. The drivers are missing seeing their bus kids every day and they want to help support the community. First Student Inc and their team decided to spread some cheer.
“Windsor area had a parade two or three weeks ago” says Angela Tyler, Operations Supervisor. That got Peter McGlynn, Area Manager and Mark Francis, District Manager thinking maybe something could be done locally as well. With permission from Halton Regional Police and the various municipalities First Student is holding parades for hospitals, long term care facilities, fire and police stations across Halton Region today.
Burlington and Oakville each have about 25 buses participating. Milton has 20 buses. Tyler says “Acton has about 12 that joined another 18 in Georgetown.
Locally the parade moved from the Acton Fire and Ambulance Halls to Georgetown Police Station, the Superstore, Georgetown Amica, Halton Hills Fire on 10 Sideroad, the Georgetown Hospital, Extendicare, Mountainview Residence and Halton Hills Fire on Maple.
Acton UP spoke with Amy Willis, Interim Patient Care Manager at Georgetown Hospital about what this type of event means to healthcare workers. “It’s just so uplifting” said Willis. “This time is so stressful for the staff and patients and it’s nice to know the community supports us.”
Thank you to the drivers and team at First Student who pulled this together. And special thanks to Yard Manager, Neil Smith, and his team who have been working for the past week getting the buses ready to hit the road for this parade and ensuring each was equipped with PPE for participants.
And a big thank you to all the frontline workers working so hard to keep us safe and healthy.
