Going the Distance for Women’s Mental Health

Shopper’s Drug Mart is once again hosting its annual 5/10km Run for Women. There is also a 1Km option for those 12 and under. The event is being run virtually this year and participants can complete their chosen distance any where and any time between June 4-11.

According to the race website “The Run for Women, brought to you by the LOVE YOU by Shoppers Drug Mart program event in Oakville will benefit Halton Healthcare's mental health programs. Halton Healthcare’s mental health team includes approximately 120 staff and 20 psychiatrists, providing support to more than 1,600 women annually, including 150 girls (17 and under). Halton Healthcare offers care and treatment for people in our community struggling with anxiety, depression, mood and panic disorders, eating disorders and other mental health related illnesses.”

By selecting “Oakville” when registering, all proceeds will benefit Oakville, Milton and Georgetown. All Georgetown registrations will directly fund the Georgetown Hospital according to the Georgetown Hospital Foundation’s website.

Registration is just $40 and “includes a technical t-shirt, UNSTOPPABLE Bracelet and our Legendary Swag Bag. 100 percent of proceeds from your registration will be directed to your local charity.”

“With the COVID-19 crisis affecting every aspect our lives, now more than ever, mental health matters and every action counts. Exercise is a great way to manage mental health, and your participation could bring someone one step closer to recovery, as proceeds from the event will go towards mental healthcare programs at Georgetown Hospital and Halton Healthcare.” Connor Vincent, Development Officer at Georgetown Hospital Foundation tells Acton UP.

Edith McDonell, who is a Manager of Diagnostic Imaging at Georgetown Hospital, has participated in this event for the past two years. She says “I participated in the 2019 run as part of the Diagnostic Imaging team which included co-workers, their family members and friends. Many Halton Healthcare staff came out and it was terrific to see the enthusiasm pre and post run. There was a lot of laughing, joking and camaraderie with teams challenging each other and enjoying themselves for a cause that everyone can relate to. Together we are Unstoppable. It’s a wonderful way to get involved and to raise some much needed funds to support mental health for our own communities. By engaging in walking or running, participants can help improve their own physical and mental health, which is both positive and rewarding. The 2020 event was held despite the restrictions of Covid as a Virtual Run which allowed for engagement in supporting this very important initiative particularly during a time when attention to mental health issues has greatly increased.”

If you would like to participate as an individual, or create or join a team, you can do it here. If you would like to support a runner/walker or team you can go here. If you would prefer to donate directly to the Georgetown Hospital Foundation you can do that here.
