Halton Hills Public Library Celebrates Family Literacy Day

HALTON HILLS, ON/ January 7, 2021 – January 27 is Family Literacy Day, and in celebration, the importance of reading will be emphasized during the entire month. HHPL invites you to have fun and raise literacy awareness. By reading to children and engaging in fun literacy activities regularly, adults actively help children improve their skills. Family literacy activities help strengthen the relationship between family members which, encourages lifelong learning. Family literacy focusses on parents, grandparents, and other family members to improve the reading, comprehension and writing skills of the whole family. Share the love of literacy! Halton Hills Public Library would love your help in spreading the word throughout Halton Hills. To show your love of reading and learning, HHPL would like to feature you reading with a family member, child or grandchild. Share your photo with HHPL on social media (Facebook, Twitter or Instagram) using the hashtag #familyLiteracyDay. HHPL will share, reshare and retweet your post. Halton Hills Public Library is holding a wide range of virtual programs in January that emphasize the importance of reading: • Weekly Family Storytimes • Weekly Baby Rhyme and Romp • French Storytime • Book Clubs for all ages • Winter Reading Challenge • Kahoot Trivia for all ages • Teen Writer’s Circle • English Conversation Circle • Equity and Diversity Book Club You can place holds on items through the website for pick up or visit HHPL’s digital library. You can even borrow games, and participate in HHPL events and programs (website, Zoom, Kahoot, Instagram or Facebook). Remember to sign up for the Winter Reading Challenge on Beanstack (hhpl.beanstack.org) or with the Beanstack app. “Reading to babies and small children is key for preparing your child to read and is a vital part of a child’s development,” says Melanie Southern, Chief Librarian. Family Literacy Day is an initiative of ABC Literacy Canada. It has been promoting literacy and life-long learning since 1990, working tirelessly to support the literacy and learning community in Canada.
