Halton Hills Public Library Partnering with Halton Food Programs

HALTON HILLS, ON/ May 4, 2021 – The Halton Hills Public Library (HHPL) has partnered with Food for Life Halton, the Georgetown Bread Basket and Acton Foodshare to ensure everyone has access to good and healthy food throughout our community. As part of this partnership, community fridges sponsored by Food for Life and funded through the Halton Region, are in both the Acton and Georgetown Branches of HHPL. These fridges provide pre-bagged items of fruits, vegetables and other perishables for residents and neighbours in need of food. Non-perishable items will be provided by Georgetown Bread Basket in the Georgetown Branch and by Acton Foodshare in the Acton Branch. Acton Foodshare will participate in the program after the Provincial restrictions are lifted. This program assists busy families, youth and seniors who are struggling to make ends meet, pick up food while balancing their busy lives. Depending on demand, food will be replenished as needed. Food for Life recognizes that accessibility sometimes makes it difficult for friends and neighbours to access Food for Life Neighbourhood Food Programs. That’s why they decided to bring food directly to those who need it most through open-access community fridges, placed strategically in Halton communities. “The idea was that people can just come and access a bag of food,” says Lori Brading, Community Lead North Halton at Food for Life. “There are no questions asked. The food is there and available for people who need it.” The Georgetown Bread Basket is a food bank operated entirely by volunteers that provides and promotes access to healthier eating in the Georgetown community. Acton Foodshare is a volunteer run food bank working to alleviate hunger and malnutrition in Acton. Food for Life, the largest food rescue organization in Halton, has rescued over 26 million pounds of surplus food. By diverting over 4 million pounds of good food last year alone, Food for Life was able to reduce the equivalent of 5.7 million kilograms of greenhouse gasses and a whopping 51 million since their inception in 1995.
