Halton Hills Takes Off its Shoes for Climate Action

Shoe Strike for Climate Action The Halton Hills Climate Action Group, along with like minded groups in Oakville, Milton and Burlington, participated in the ‘Fridays for Future’ global strike action on September 25 by hosting a Shoe Strike for Climate Action. Due to COVID-19, there haven’t been any strikes or rallies happening. And with COVID cases on the rise in Ontario things needed to be done a little differently for this action. The Acton event was hosted on the lawn in front of the Acton Arena and Community Centre. Participants were invited to leave a pair of shoes and/or a sign. These were set up to represent the participant. “There were no speakers, or music or people, just shoes,” explains Acton’s Shoe Strike for Climate Action organizer Dr Monika Caemmerer. “Politicians have lots of nice words that need to be followed by serious action. Climate change is ongoing despite COVID-19 and we are calling for a green and just economic recovery.” When asked if the action is directed at our municipal government, Dr. Caemmerer explains, “we are all most privileged to live here. Halton Hills is doing amazing. Mayor Bonnette was one of the first to declare a climate emergency, aiming for net-zero carbon emissions here by 2030. This action is to address our provincial and federal governments and to raise awareness, what we do now will determine the future.” Dr. Caemmerer calls on everyone to do their part. Her hope is for “a liveable future with biodiversity, clean air, water and soil and reduced carbon dioxide emissions. She reminds us, “we all can, and should, do better.” The Halton Hills Climate Action group will host further initiatives in the coming year.
