Today marked Dorothy Rognvaldson’s 102 birthday. How do you celebrate something so momentous during this time of social distancing? With a personal parade of course! Organized by friends and family, the 68-car procession made its way down Birchway Place and through the front entrance of the Legion Terrace where Rognvaldson sat waving to her fans. It was led by Halton Police and included Mayor Rick Bonnette, Regional Councillor Clark Somerville, a school bus (one family), friends and family from the local community and her church. Many cars were decorated with balloons and signs, some even played “Happy Birthday”. The display was enjoyed by many of the Terrace residents who also watched from their verandas. Following the procession family and onlookers serenaded Dorothy with “Happy Birthday”. About the event, Mayor Bonnette says “Dorothy was my great neighbour for 30 years, Citizen of the Year, a true inspiration. In these difficult times this definitely is a feel-good moment.” Acton UP spoke with the birthday girl and her family. Of the event she said, “It was overwhelming”. And when asked what the secret to her longevity was, she replied she “grew up on a farm” and “healthy eating”. Family members were quick to quip “and a martini a day” which she smiled but did not confirm nor dispute. Asked about her plans for the day she replied, “well I’ll probably go to bed after this!” Happy birthday Dorothy! From all of us from Acton UP.
