Chris Cassey

The Townsend-Smith Foundation was founded in 2011 by the family and friends of Milton Residents Ron Townsend and Tessie Smith. Their end goal is to create a 15000 square foot residential hospice facility in North Halton (Milton or Halton Hills). According to their website the facility will include “10 private, home-like rooms with private baths for terminally ill patients as well as comfortable common spaces for family and friends and office space for hospice staff. Our residential hospice will offer specialized care for people who are unable to remain at home but do not require the acute care of a hospital during their last days.” To this end, the group organized its first virtual Hike for Hospice. The event will take place on September 26 between 10 a.m. and 12 p.m. Participants can hike, walk, run or bike 5km to help raise funds and awareness. Participants are encouraged to post photos with the hashtag #hikeforhospice or film a short video finishing the sentence “I’m hiking because…..” and share on social media. Acton’s Beverley Mattocks got involved last year and aims to make this year’s hike bigger and better. She is the Captain of Team “Acton’s Hike for Hospice” and sits on the Townsend-Smith Foundation’s Awareness Committee. When asked why she got involved she refers to the brochure she first read which says, ‘Gentle will be the journey.’ “It’s such a difficult time” says Mattocks, “and things like kindness and privacy are so important.” This year Mattocks’ team will meet at the playground at the Wallace Street Park on Dr Moore Crescent at 10 a.m. on September 26. They will hike, physically distanced, to Prospect Park where they will meet another local team and do a couple of laps of the loop around the park. “My goal is to raise awareness and $1000,” says Mattocks. If you would like to join team “Acton’s Hope for Hospice” or donate to their efforts you can do so at https://www.townsend-smith.ca/ Registration is just $25 for which you receive a Townsend-Smith t-shirt and a swag bag. This is a real opportunity to help North Halton residents facing end of life to do so in dignity.
