On August 7th we gathered to pay tribute on the passing of one of our Life members. Fondly. we called her ‘mother’, for to know her was to love her, unless that is, you were on the end of one of her acid tongue lashings, which you received if you crossed her. Recipient of the prestigious Meritorious service medal for her service to both Branch 197 Legion, and Ladies Auxiliary, spanning more than 60 years, Joyce Buchanan belonged to a generation of ladies, the likes of which we will not see again.
Once again, our Ladies horseshoe players triumphed at this year’s provincial championship, held on August 6th. Teresa Uiterwyk took first place in the Ladies singles. Teresa, and Amy Newman came first in Ladies Doubles, whilst on the Men’s side, Keith Andrews and Dave Windsor placed second in the Men’s senior doubles. Congratulations guys we are proud of you all.
He died more than eighty years ago. He was a prospector, miner, Canadian champion boxer as, well as a WW1 hero, and a legend within the Princess Pats Canadian Light Infantry Regiment. Though he died in 1942, nobody knew where, Lieutenant Jack Munro, was buried, until recently when it was discovered that he was interned here in Acton at Fairview cemetery. Working with our branch, local veteran, Greg Ferguson, of the PPCLI Association had spent several years raising funds to give Jack a new headstone, and on Saturday August 13, we took part in the unveiling ceremony to recognise this legendary figure.
