Legion News (October 2020)

On behalf of the executive and members of Branch 197, I offer our deepest sympathy to Ren, Evan, and family in the loss of our comrade Karen. Karen was a former executive member of the branch who was a wonderful help to me when I was President. She will certainly be missed at the branch………………… Peggy Graham. Sick and Donations Chair.

As previously stated, this year’s Remembrance Parade scheduled for Saturday November 7th has been cancelled. We plan to hold a service on Wednesday November 11th and as we don’t know what the restrictions will be imposed regarding the number of attendees on that date, we will proceed with a limited number of Legion members, who will all wear masks and practice social distancing. The ceremony will take place between 10:45 am and 11:15 am. All attendees must be registered for contact tracing purposes, by name and phone number. Wreaths will be laid on the previous day by members of the Executive. If the numbers allow, we will welcome more members at the ceremony, but you must be registered, so please register by sending an email to the branch. Family Wreaths can be purchased by emailing the branch.

The following quote taken is from a letter received from our Dominion Command President, Thomas Irvine, encouraging us to work on this years Poppy Drive “The funds provided by this traditional annual event remains more important than ever as many head into an era of financial insecurity” We will however proceed with caution, by placing our poppy boxes in the larger outlets, i.e., Beer store , Liquor Store, Giant Tiger, No Frills, etc. . There will be no Legion Members in attendance. We are hoping that the General Public will be extra generous this year as our ability to canvas is greatly restricted.

It is extremely important that members renew their membership for 2021. You can renew online at https://www.legion.ca/join-us/renewal or you can submit a cheque to the branch by mail and include your Legion Number as well as your membership type. Annual membership is unchanged at $60. Eric has created a mailbox on the Kitchen Door at the back entrance to the Legion for those wishing to place envelopes addressed to Membership RCL Br.197.

Just a reminder to Acton students that the legion sponsors a Remembrance Day contest consisting of black and white and coloured posters, poetry and essays for grades one through twelve. You can participate through your local school, or individually. If you have any questions, email the branch at branch197@cogeco.net and we will get back to you. This is a great way to honour our veterans by keeping their memory alive.

November 11th will be an even sadder day this year as we will be losing our own WW!! Sweetheart, Phyllis Bunn. Phyllis has decided to relocate to Collingwood in order to be close to her family. 96-year-old Phyllis, it will be remembered, signed the Veterans Covenant with the Town of Halton Hills, On our behalf, back in June 2014. Phyllis has been with us for the past 16 years and we will surely miss her.

Please check the webpage at legion197.com, and in addition we will be posting information on Facebook.

You can email the branch at rclbr197@cogeco.net
