Mayor’s Monthly Column
April 2021
Who thought that the COVID-19 pandemic would last this long? We are now in the third wave of the pandemic. How are you doing? Really, how are you doing? I know many of you are stressed. If you are having trouble coping and are stressed to the max, don’t keep your feelings bottled up; contact Crisis Outreach and Support Team at 1-877-825-9011. This pandemic is particularly difficult for our young people. They can call Reach Out Centre for Kids (R.O.C.K.) at 905-878-9785 if you are under 18 years of age. These services are open 24/7.
The pandemic has been cruel to our small retail businesses, restaurants, local gyms, dance studios and others. They have really been given a kick in the gut and now we are in another lockdown with more regulations from the Province. These businesses are owned by your friends and neighbours. If you can, please support them by purchasing a gift card, take-out orders, purchase online or buy a membership for a future date. They need our help now.
Trying to keep some sense of normalcy, the Town will be celebrating Earth Week. April 22 will be the 51st anniversary of Earth Week. Back by popular demand we will be selling trees again for $5.00 from April 2030. The new online platform will also allow you to make a donation to local Food Banks. Residents will select a pick-up date between May 3-7 barring any Provincial restrictions due to COVID-19. Full details are available at haltonhills.ca/earthweek.
Volunteer week is April 18-24. This past year we have all been so lucky to see inspiring acts of kindness and people coming together for the common purpose of brightening someone's day or experience through all forms of volunteering. With COVID-19 we have seen the beauty of individual and collective efforts during a pandemic to do something small or large for someone through volunteering.
On behalf of Council and the community, I wish to offer my condolences to family and friends of two former Councillors who have passed away recently. Allan Cook (1988-1997) and Dobbie Frizzell (2000-2003).
