Mayor’s Monthly Column July 2021

Summer has finally arrived. Things are starting to get back to some normalcy. I noticed a lot more people are looking like themselves with their hair coiffed. More stores are opening up with certain restrictions. Summer sports have started up just in time as we have the three Field of Dreams diamonds ready for use. I want to thank our local sports groups, residents, and Town staff for collaborating to complete this wonderful project. If you haven’t seen it, it is an amazing facility.

Diamond #3 has been named in recognition of Dee Dee Haynes-Ridley, a local citizen and volunteer who made significant contributions to sport and community within the Town.

I want to give a huge shout out to all the Graduates of 2021. It has been a most difficult and unusual school year to say the least. The teachers certainly have been challenged to teach under these circumstances. They did a tremendous a job as did all students.

What a tremendous job Halton Region, Public Health and Town staff did to get the Gellert Centre ready for the Covid-19 vaccinations. I think you all agree it is very well organized.

We must recognize the truth of the atrocities that happened in residential schools in our country and the ongoing pain experienced by the survivors, families and communities and come together to support the Indigenous members of our community and educate ourselves and our families on this shameful chapter in our history.

The Halton Hills Public Libraries in Georgetown and Acton have begun a display of colourful ribbons, in recognition of ribbon skirts that honour First Nations’ heritage, resiliency and historical causes. Orange ribbons are up at the Gellert Community Centre and signage at other Town facilities. Residents are invited to contribute to the display by adding their own ribbons.

A list of resources has been compiled on the Town’s website as well to help support learning and discussion with friends and family. This is a time of profound sadness and mourning, and only through knowledge and discussion can we ensure a better future for all our communities.
