HALTON HILLS, ON – One of the first actions taken by the Halton Region COVID-19 Recovery Committee was to submit a joint request to the Provincial and Federal governments for funding. The group that comprises representation from all five local municipalities and the Halton Regional Police Services, brings together heads of Council and senior administration to share information and collaborate on advocacy efforts and other initiatives.
“Our Town, along with municipalities across the country has been hit hard by the COVID-19 crisis,” said Halton Hills Mayor Rick Bonnette. “I, along with my colleagues are calling on the Government of Canada and the Province of Ontario to provide financial and economic relief to address the impacts of dealing with the pandemic at the local level.”
In a recent joint release, the Recovery Committee applauded the Federal government’s move to fast track gas tax funding but noted that response initiatives including infrastructure changes, communications, signage, cleaning along with escalated costs, deferred taxpayer payments and lost programming revenue have created tremendous budget shortfalls.
The Mayor further noted that by law, municipalities cannot run budget deficits and urged federal and provincial officials to support the request for assistance.
