Meet Candidate for Ward 1 Councillor: Michael Albano

“I want to represent the people and serve Ward 1 well.” On May 5th, 2022, long-time Acton resident Mike Albano filed to run for Halton Hills Council in Ward 1. Albano was previously elected for council back in a by-election in 2015 and hopes to be re-elected once again in this year's election. Previously, Albano worked in Guelph’s Upper Grand District School Board for 36 years until his retirement in March.

Albano is involved with the Acton Community Garden, Acton Fall Fair, the Community Foundation of North Halton, Townsend Smith Foundation, Council’s representative on the Acton BIA Board of directors, and Chairperson for Acton Foodshare. Albano joins Acton UP in an interview regarding his campaign, “I was involved in the Union in the past, politics are not new to me. I know politics and the ins and outs.”

In the past, Albano was a member of the Acton Lions Club, Big Brother Canada, Acton Fall Fair Knights of Columbus, and ParaPan Am Games. Albano believes he is somebody who can provide leadership and direction to the council due to his previous critical positions in the past. Albano comments, “I am a big advocate for affordable housing options in the community. As I campaign, that is probably the number one issue. Also addressing traffic concerns in the community.”

Albano has done a considerable amount of work with councillors to address the concerns of the community regarding the traffic in places such as Mill Street West. Albano shares, “All of the items and concerns are very important to me. We just have to prioritize each concern.”

Mike continues, “I am also a big advocate of scrutinizing the budget when we get the budget, and when I am elected that will probably be the first thing presented to us–and I will address that. I am also concerned about climate change as well. We need to focus on doing our part to eliminate carbon and so on.” Albano also shares, “I am a big proponent for economical change and growth. Jobs and climate change go hand-in-hand. We need to keep the jobs in our community.”

Albano has also received many awards due to his diligence and hard work with his previous employers. Albano is the recipient of the Award of Merit for outstanding contributions to education, the Wellington County Board of Education's Chairman Plus Award, and the Upper Grand District School Board's Everyday Hero Award.

Albano believes that he will be capable to support the residents in Ward 1 and address the community’s concerns. “I enjoy the job, I listen to people and I advocate for causes.” More information regarding Mike Albano can be found on his Halton Hills page here: https://www.haltonhills.ca/en/your-government/michael-albano.aspx.
