New Rainbow Crosswalk for Halton Hills Supports Diversity and Inclusion

HALTON HILLS, ON - The Town of Halton Hills is pleased to announce the first ever rainbow crosswalk to be installed in downtown Georgetown this September. The multi-colour crosswalk will be adjacent to the Halton Hills Public Library (HHPL) Georgetown Branch and Cultural Centre where Market and Church Streets meet. Rainbow crosswalks are a way for communities and residents to express support, and show diversity and inclusion for their 2SLGBTQ+ residents. The rainbow flag is synonymous with the gay community and as such HHPL and the Town are showing their ‘colours of Pride’ by implementing the rainbow crosswalk initiative that supports 2SLGBTQ+ parents, families with gender variant children, all members of the 2SLGTBQ+ community including youth, and those who support them. Currently there are over 30 rainbow crosswalks across Ontario. The Halton Hills Public Library is contributing to the initiative along with other businesses that also support the implementation of the Town’s first rainbow crosswalk. “The Rainbow Crosswalk Project demonstrates Halton Hill’s commitment to our 2SLGBTQ+ community,” said Mayor Rick Bonnette. “A permanent installation of a multi-colour crosswalk in downtown Georgetown this fall symbolizes support for diversity and inclusion and our ongoing responsibility to keep the conversation alive.” An Official Ribbon Cutting Ceremony for the Rainbow Crosswalk will be held in September. Mayor Bonnette will host the ceremony and it will be live streamed on Facebook. “I’m delighted to see the Rainbow Crosswalk installation come to fruition this fall,” said Halton Hills Councillor Jane Fogal. “The multi-colour crosswalk recognizes the 2SLGBTQ+ community and embodies the diversity of individuals and families that make Halton Hills a great place to live and work.”
