Why would a group of realtors go for a walk on, what is statistically, the coldest night of the year? Well when Emma Mann heard about this event from the director of the local food bank she knew she wanted to get involved. “As a Relator our livelihood literally comes from putting roofs over people’s heads in our community, how great would it be to have a team of Relators giving back”, said Mann.
'The Coldest Night of the Year' is a national event where teams and individuals walk through the cold and the dark in hopes of raising $6 million for charities whose commitment and work transforms peoples' lives by addressing issues from homelessness and food scarcity to mental health and shelters.
“The event is about breaking the cycle and raising awareness about homelessness, which is why it is held on what is statistically the coldest night of the year”, says Mann.
Locally, the event fundraising goal is $25,000 in support of the Georgetown Bread Basket. The event has already reached 68 percent of that goal with the event happening on February 22, 2020.
Mann has been joined by four RLM colleagues, Kelly Sidoriak, Nusha Mathieson, Susan Lougheed and Matt Poitras. Each member of team, The Royal LePage Rock’n Realtors, will walk either two, five or 10 kilometers at the event. “It’s important to give back to the community you’re from” Lougheed explains, “It adds meaning to your life and the funds are going to people who seriously need it.”
Mann adds she “recently read that 30 percent of local foodbank users were seniors and the next highest demographic was children.”
To boost their fundraising efforts the team has developed 'The Grand in Your Hand 50/50'. There are 100 numbered squares available at $20/square. Once the card is filled a random number will be drawn and the owner of the winning square will win $1000 with the other $1000 going to the Bread Basket. Squares can be purchased at the RLM office at 324 Guelph Street, Georgetown.
