Maybe you remember going through the Sobeys checkout in December and being asked if you wanted to make a donation to the Acton Community Christmas Hamper Program?
Between community donations and some matching funding and other initiatives, Sobeys Acton was able to donate $30,015.38.
On April 6, Debbie Guthro, Store Manager and Colleen McKnight Rolfe, Front End Manager, from Sobeys Acton presented Chris Baginski-Hansen from the Acton Community Christmas Hamper Program, with gift cards totaling $20,000.
They also provided Mike Albano representing the Acton Foodshare with $10,015.38 in gift cards.
“Acton was the top fundraiser in our district, as well as all of Sobeys wide” Colleen tells Acton UP. “For a small community it sure is amazing.”
Both charities were very grateful for the donations as they have seen most of their major fundraising efforts canceled due to COVID. Schools and service groups couldn’t hold their annual food drives. Without a Santa Claus parade there wasn’t that collection source. Even the Christmas Kettle collection by the Salvation Army was canceled.
“There is a huge need to feel like you’re helping your community.” says Baginski-Hansen. “The generosity of the people of Acton is so overwhelming and humbling. During this past tumultuous year, so many people showed their care, compassion and generosity by donating to the Sobeys campaign. This donation will go far in helping to ease some of the many burdens that people are experiencing and knowing how many people care brings so much hope during this time.”
Albano, who was just appointed Chair to Acton Foodshare in January, says there is an increased need for the program and the food needs fluctuate. “Right now we need canned baked beans, canned potatoes, dry potatoes, all varieties of canned soups, green and peppermint tea, cookies and spreads like chocolate hazelnut. Our Facebook page is updated regularly.” Their page is https://www.facebook.com/ActonFoodshare
