January 19, 2021 marked the launch of the first cannabis store in Acton. T Cannabis quietly opened at 38 Mill Street East, next to Scotiabank. Acton UP spoke with the store’s Director, Tanvi Bhandari who said, “yesterday’s numbers were good, better than expected actually.” While opening the store took a long time, she went on to say “We are happy to be in Acton. We love the town and our landlord is an amazing woman. We are hoping now that the community will come out and support us.” When asked why she decided to work in this industry she said “I studied in Boston when it was decriminalized there. I later moved to Canada and when it was being legalized here, I thought YES, this is what I really want to do.” In addition to Acton, she owns locations in Beamsville, Smiths Falls, New Liskeard, Fort Frances, Rockland and Renfrew and is opening stores in Cochrane and Kenora. There are a lot of regulations surrounding the selling of cannabis, essentially the shop “sells clean merch, like the LCBO” Bhandari explained. The product is regulated by the government, every store has an inspector appointed. “The inspectors are all good and helpful and able to provide guidance.” Additionally, delivery drivers require certification and in store and curbside pick-ups are recorded. Cameras are on the storefront to capture staff checking IDs. Akhil Bhasin is part of the management team here to train staff and set up the store. He started with T Cannabis in March 2019 coming from the hotel industry where he had over 10 years of experience. “We want people to know that the product is certified and regulated, unlike the black market where you really don’t know what you are getting,” says Bhasin. “We are here to educate buyers. Lots of people are hesitant, we can help. We want the experience to be comfortable.” Products available at T Cannabis include flower, pre-rolled, concentrates, vaporizers, edibles and accessories. They are open daily from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. (will be 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. after COVID restrictions are lifted), Monday to Saturday and 10 to 6 on Sunday. Due to COVID restrictions only curbside pickup and delivery are available. Delivery is free within 35km of the store. They ask that you have payment and government issued ID available for either option. If you are 19 or over, you can shop at https://tcann.ca/acton/. If you want advice before purchasing, you can call the store at 519-853-9898.
