Teams competing at District event at McMaster University in Hamilton
Ten teams from Halton FIRST Robotics will compete at the FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition in Science and Technology) Robotics District
Competition on April 6-8, 2018 at McMaster University in Hamilton. The event draws high school students from more than 42 registered teams across Ontario to design and build robots.
Teams must compete in at least two district events where they accumulate points to qualify for the FIRST World Championship held later this month. Teams from Halton attended the first district event in either Durham, York, Barrie, Waterloo or Windsor. The upcoming FIRST competition will be their second district event.
The top 60 teams in Ontario will be invited to compete at the provincial championship at the Hershey Centre in Mississauga from April 12-14. The top 27 teams from this event will then represent Ontario at the FIRST World Championship in Detroit, Michigan on April 25-28.
“Our Halton robotics teams have spent six weeks building their robot for the FIRST competition,” says Veronica Kleinsmith, Technological Education Instructional Program Leader for the Halton District School Board. “Each team raises funds from community and business sponsors, designs a brand for their team, hones their teamwork skills, builds and finally programs their robots for a difficult field-game challenge. The weekend event is an exciting opportunity for all our Halton teams to compete together at the same competition.”
FIRST inspires young people to be leaders and innovators in science and technology by engaging them in exciting mentor-based programs that build science, engineering, and technology skills to inspire innovation and foster self-confidence, communication and leadership.
