The Benefits of Graphic Novels, Comic Books, and Magazines for Kids

Summer is here, and it’s more important than ever to keep your child reading. Reading every day helps your child keep and build the skills they worked so hard to learn all year at school.

Graphic novels can be the best way to promote a love of reading and turn kids into avid readers! While some people may dismiss it as ‘not real reading,’ this couldn’t be further from the truth. The benefits of introducing graphic novels are endless. Here are six reasons why you and your child should enjoy a graphic novel (or two) this summer!

1. Understanding the Stories: The combination of text and pictures in graphic novels helps kids better understand the story and remember information. The illustrations provide visual context and cues, making it easier for children to follow along and understand the plot, characters, and settings.

2. A Fun Format: For reluctant readers or children who struggle with reading, graphic novels can be less intimidating. The images break down the text into manageable chunks, making reading feel less overwhelming. After all, a picture is worth a thousand words. This can boost their confidence and encourage them to explore the story further.

3. Improved Reading Skills: Despite the presence of pictures, graphic novels still require children to read text. They learn to read speech bubbles, captions, and panels, which helps them develop their reading skills, vocabulary, and comprehension. Visual cues also help children interpret the context of the story and understand the emotions of the characters.

4. Foster a Love for Stories: Graphic novels often feature interesting stories and characters, which can captivate children and ignite a love for storytelling. By exposing children to visual storytelling, graphic novels can inspire them to explore other forms of literature and develop a lifelong love for reading.

5. Bridge to Other Kinds of Books: Graphic novels cover a wide range of genres, including fantasy, science fiction, historical fiction, and more. This variety allows children to explore a wide range of stories that they may not have found as interesting as traditional books. Graphic novels can inspire children to explore other kinds of reading material.

6. Enhanced Creativity: The combination of words and pictures in graphic novels stimulates children's imagination and creativity. They can see the story in their minds, interpret the action through the pictures, and then even go on to create their own artwork or stories based on the graphic novels they read. This artistic aspect can be particularly appealing to children who are visual learners.

Graphic novels provide a way for children to enjoy reading, even if they don’t enjoy traditional books. The visual appeal, accessible format, and engaging stories make graphic novels a great way for children of all ages and reading levels to improve their reading skills, boost their comprehension, and to love storytelling.

Where to start? Stop by the Halton Hills Public Library (HHPL) to browse the wide range of graphic novels. Encourage your child to look through the books and choose one that interests them. It’s important that they select something they find interesting themselves. Finding a book is part of the excitement of reading.

At HHPL we offer Summer Reading Challenges for all ages to keep everyone in your family reading all summer long! A great way to encourage children to read is to register them for the children’s TD Summer Reading Club. Kids can log their reading every day and earn prizes! Graphic novels are included, so borrow as many as your child would like! Learn more at www.hhpl.ca/src
