The Power behind Local POC Entrepreneurs: Beauty with Christabelle

A discussion about makeup and passion.

The month of February Acton Up has decided to write articles on local black entrepreneurs who are taking their business into their own hands. This weeks focus is on POC beauty and makeup with Christabelle Appiah.

Christabelle is a twenty-three year old entrepreneur who started her makeup and lipgloss business back in the summer of 2020. Christabelle’s company is called Bella Cee, it is a vegan and cruelty-free brand that promotes women feeling beautiful all over the world.

Christabelle, what made you want to create your own business?

I started this brand because I wanted to build a company that not only helps women feel beautiful but to also inspire young black women in creating empires for generations to come. I Bella Cee because I have a passion in making other feel good about themselves!

How do you find being an entrepreneur as a POC? Do you find that your community supports you in order to grow?

As a woman of colour I feel as though my community does support what I am doing and encourages the growth of my business through purchasing, telling others about my business or simply following our social media platforms. Though I do feel supported in my business I do believe there needs to be more representation of people of colour that are artist's or business owners.

Do you feel the media covers POC business and entrepreneurs enough?

It is important for those that look like us to see themselves through the media in order to understand that there is a market for us and we are important within those markets. There is a space for us all and it should be shown.

Christabelle’s passion for inspiring young black women is apart of the beauty of her business and the POC makeup industry. Often, the makeup industry is not catered towards POC women hence why black women do not always see a reflection of themselves in the modern beauty standard, but rather a disfigured version of themselves.
