Town Announces Programs for Black History Month

Halton Hills, ON – This February, residents of Halton Hills are invited to celebrate Black History Month through literary, arts, and educational programs offered by the Town. The public can access content from the Halton Hills Public Library and Cultural Services using the Visit Halton Hills website and social media channels. Mayor Rick Bonnette will be recognizing Black History Month at the February 1 meeting of Town Council. “It is more important now, than ever before, that we take the time to acknowledge the legacy of Black Canadians and contributions of Black writers as we seek to foster a united, inclusive and equitable society.” Highlights of Black History Month programming include:

  • “Tracing Black Lives in Guelph 1890-1945,” a virtual lecture series delivered by Dr. Jade Ferguson, Associate Professor at the University of Guelph

  • Video interviews by Francesca Durham from Culture Days 2020 with interdisciplinary artist Mosa McNeilly and hip-hop artist Promise

  • Family Storytimes featuring Black authors and illustrators

  • A selection of artwork from the Helson Gallery’s past group exhibition by the Halton Black History Awareness Society, for Emancipation Day 2019

  • #ReadingBlackout campaign with library staff sharing books and information by Black writers on teen and adult social media channels
