Mayor’s Statement
(June 9, 2021) Today I asked staff to lower the flags at all municipal facilities in response to the horrific anti-Muslim hate-crime perpetrated in London, Ontario that killed three generations of a single family. This attack is a monumental tragedy, the legacy of which will live on through the young survivor who lost his family.
The lowering of the flags is a small gesture of respect to recognize the victims of this targeted attack. I want to express my profound sadness to the Muslim members of our community. I know that anti-Muslim violence has been on the rise across the country. I hope you feel safe and supported in Halton Hills. If any of you are feeling unsafe, I encourage you to reach out to let us know how we can help.
We must confront racism in all of its forms. I condemn racism and acts of hatred on any scale. What can we need to do, to create a safe, welcoming, and inclusive community? I ask residents to consider how we can be better - kind and caring – as individuals and as a community. What can each of us do to support our neighbours so that everyone feels
safe and valued?
I do not want to see us lower our flags again for another tragedy.
Mayor Rick Bonnette
