Missing Boater Located
Update:
On Tuesday, August 31, 2021, at approximately 10:30 am, a boater in the vicinity of Bronte Harbour in Oakville notified the Halton Regional Police Service (HRPS) of a deceased person in the water.
The HRPS has confirmed this to be Robert Wyles who went missing on August 26, 2021.
The HRPS would like to extend our sincerest condolences to the family and friends of Mr. Wyles, and thank the public for their assistance in the search.
Original Release:
Shortly after 6pm on August 26th Halton Police Marine Officers were in the area of 16 Mile Creek and Lake Ontario assisting a boater while a storm was moving through the area. During this time the they noticed another boat nearby which appeared to be adrift. Upon closer examination the Marine Officers were able to board the vessel and determine there were no occupants aboard. Police investigation revealed the vessel was purchased earlier in the day and the experienced operator was observed alone, boarding and leaving Bronte Harbor at approximately 1230pm where he had purchased the vessel.
A search and rescue was immediately initiated which quickly expanded to joint efforts between Halton/Peel/Hamilton Police Marine units, Towarf and JRCC (CFB Trenton). A shoreline search was also conducted along the shores of Lake Ontario from 16 Mile Creek Area (Trafalgar Rd) to Bronte Harbor ( Burloak Dr) by Halton Police search team. JRCC has assumed command on the on water search and it is anticipated to continue throughout the night and into August 27th. Homeowners can expect to see illumination in the area as the rescuers utilize flares to enhance visibility during the night search.
Halton Police are requesting residents with shoreline property within this area to check their shorelines for this missing person.
