HALTON HILLS, ON – Halton Hills residential property owners will see an overall increase of 6.06% on their 2024 tax bill. This allows the Town to maintain current service levels, invest in infrastructure through an increase of 0.78% to the state of good repair special levy and alsoaddress future healthcare funding needs through the creation of a new healthcare special levy of 0.25%.
"In bringing forward the 2024 budget, Mayor Ann Lawlor set the stage saying: This was a very tough budget analysis for our Council. On the one hand, Town expenses out of our control have risen due to provincial downloading of planning responsibilities; high insurance rates and provincial removal of some municipal income sources and inflation, particularly for our road and infrastructure projects. On the other hand, our residents expect and deserve a certain standard of service. A new item this year is a small healthcare levy which will contribute to future construction of a new hospital and other facilities. To give an example of costs, on an average two storey house where 2023 property taxes are about $5,400, owners will pay an additional $327 per year or $27 per month."
The Town of Halton Hills collects property taxes on behalf of Halton Region and the school boards. The 6.06% overall property tax rate is a result of the Town’s budgetlevy increase, blended with the taxes paid to Halton Region (5.1% projected) and the school boards (0%).
Chris Mills, Chief Administrative Officer, echoed the Mayor’s comments, noting the significant pressures that the town and all municipalities were facing in a time of high inflation. “Adding to the complexity,” said Mills, is the fact that we are in a time of low assessment growth while we prepare to commence the construction in the Vision Georgetown area.”
