Arrest in Georgetown Fraud Investigation - Notice to Residents in "L7G" and "L5N" Postal Code Areas

The Halton Regional Police Service – Regional Fraud Unit has charged a Georgetown man with several fraud-related offences after an extensive investigation. In February of 2021, investigators identified a suspect in a number of fraudulent credit card applications where personal information from a number of Halton residents was used . It is alleged that this individual compromised a number of Canada Post community mailboxes in Georgetown and northwest Mississauga, subsequently stealing personal mail items from residents. This information was then used to fraudulently apply for different financial services through banks and other lenders. On April 28th, 2021, the Accused was arrested and search warrant was executed at his Georgetown residence where a significant amount of evidence was discovered. Roberto Altomare (53) of Georgetown has been charged with:

  • Fraud Over $5000 (2 counts)

  • Unauthorized Use of Credit Card Data (2 counts)

  • Theft from Mail

  • Investigators anticipate additional victims to be identified through cooperation with other police services and financial institutions.

For residents of the area codes beginning with “L7G” (Georgetown) and “L5N” (northwest Mississauga): This notice is to alert you that mail belonging to your residence may have been compromised as a result of a Canada Post mailbox breach. Your personal information may be at risk. Some of the indicators that you may have been affected include missing items of mail, receiving unsolicited mail from financial institutions pertaining to credit cards, or lines of credit opened in your name. If you believe that your personal information has been compromised, please consider the following: 1. Contacting one of the consumer credit reporting agencies listed below and request a copy of your credit report. Equifax: 1-800-465-7166 TransUnion: 1-800-663-9980 2. If your credit has been compromised, contact and advise the relevant financial institution(s). Provide them with the necessary details, and further request that they report the issue to the appropriate police jurisdictions.
