Halton Regional Police Service (HRPS) would like to remind residents to keep their speeds down during the current COVID-19 pandemic. This appeal follows Canada Road Safety Week, which ran May 12 to 19, 2020, where police services across the province reminded motorists that less traffic and open roads were not an invitation to speed or drive aggressively, drive distracted or drive while impaired. The HRPS has seen a spike in stunt driving offences, particularly in the north end of the region (Halton Hills). Over a ten day period (May 1- 10), officers with platoon one in District 1 (Milton/ Halton Hills) laid 11 stunt driving charges. All of these incidents resulted in cars being seized for a period of 7 days and the driver's licence being suspended for 7 days. Eight of the incidents took place in Halton Hills and three took place in Milton. The highest speed charged was for a driver going 160 km/h in a posted 80 km/h zone. This offence took place on Steeles Avenue in Halton Hills. The HRPS would like to thank platoon one in District 1 for the officer's dedication to road safety and residents for their cooperation. Residents are reminded to call 9-1-1 if they witness driving behaviours that they feel put them, or others, at risk.
